Maarten Marchau
I was born in 1967 and raised in Bruges (B). Even from the earliest days my father taught me the love of nature and photography (thanks, dad!). He took us (me and my brothers) on early hiking-trips onto the moors of Assebroek and showed us how to use our pocket-cameras to appreciate and record the beauty of the land.
By 1994, I'd moved to Gent, where me and my girlfriend (Martine) still live. The darkroom at my Grandfather's place didn't get used anymore and I switched from black & white negative to slides. I became a bit less productive, photography-wise. This was partly due to the costs of developing film and making prints but also due to the arrival of our children, Emma in 2000 and Alexander in 2004. It was then, in 2004 that I realised by switching to digital photography I could avoid the growing processing costs, despite the initial investment cost. I use a digital SLR camera with a selection of specialised lenses for the different types of photography that interest me most. I learn a lot from other photographers who show me their work. Together with this ‘looking and learning’ I use my own ideas and approach to present my views. I hope that this approach helps people appreciate my work. Maarten. |
